Greek Religion

Greek religion was very important for society and it was a great part of their culture. They believed that they had an afterlife awaiting for them. The greek didn't have a sacred text, but they had a wide variety of fictitious stories, called myths. The myths were mostly about gods, there were several types of categories of gods, for example: olympian gods, titan gods, primeval gods, underworld gods, sea gods, sky gods, rustic gods, agricultural gods, etc... The first three categories of gods represent the different generations to rule the cosmos.

There are twelve olympian gods, they influenced all aspects of mortal's lifes. This gods were: Aphrodite, she was the goddess of beauty; Apollo the god of the oracle; Ares, the god of war; Artemis, goddess of hunting; Athena, goddess of wise counsel; Demeter, goddess of agriculture; Dionysus, god of wine; Hephaestus, god of fire; Hera goddess of marriage; Hermes, agent and herald of Zeus; Poseidon, god of sea; Zeus, he was the king of gods, the god of sky and weather, law, order and fate.

Another categiory for the gods was titan gods, but only eight of them form part of ancient art. This gods are divided into the mayor titans and minor titans and they are: Atlas, Cronus, Mnemosyne, Oceanus, Prometheus, Rhea, Tethys, Themis(mayor titans), Asteria, Eos, Hecate, Helius, Leto, Selene(minor titans).


The primeval gods were the basic components of the universe which emerged at creation. This gods inculded Earth, Air, Sea, Sky, Fresh Water, Underworld, Darkness, Night, Light, Day, Procreation and Time. Their names were: Ananke;necessity, Chronos;time, Eros;procreation, Gaea;earth, Hemera;day, Nyx;night, Oceanus;water, Ourea;mountains, Pontus;sea, Tethys;nursing, Thalassa;sea and Uranus;sky.


Underworld gods were all rules by Hades and Persephone, some of this gods of the underworld were: Cerberus, Charon, Cronus, Erinyes, Hares, Hecate, Nyx, etc...

The sea gods were all commanded by their superior, Poseidon. Commonly metioned gods from the sea were: Amphitrite, Aphrodite(which was also the goddess of love), Galatea, Nereids, Nereus, Oceanus, Pontus, Scylla, Thetis, Tethys and Triton.


This category was for the sky and weather gods, they were all commanded by the most important of all gods, Zeus and his wife Hera. Some of them are: Anemi, Atlas, Aurae, Boreas, Eos, Helius, Hera, Horae, Iris, Selene and Zeus.


Other categories that existed for gods were, rustic gods and agriculture gods. Greeks had a wide variety of gods because they believed that evrything that happened in their lives was controled by something. Withput a doubt they were polytheistic, this means that they beleived in many gods.
